Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was a little girl. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art and literature, or even theater. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of the power of art as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social sassy and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still in university. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house of a particular Jury member. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was hired right from college to be a junior publicist at a small studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
